Green Warrior® Green Roof Composts

Petalshell Associates Ltd manufacture Green Warrior® Green Roof Composts for use in Extensive, Semi-Extensive and Intensive green roof systems. These terms refer to the amount of maintenance that the roof requires. We can supply either our basic mixes or mixes that have been modified to suit local conditions or clients’ special requirements. Modified mixes can be designed to recreate local habitats and increase the bio-diversity of the roof.

Green Warrior® Extensive Green Roof Compost

Our basic Extensive substrate mix is a blend of lightweight expanded aggregates and fully composted botanical residues which is suitable for use in the three main types of Extensive green roof:

1. Sedum Roofs
   With a substrate depth of 20–100mm, sedum roofs are created from pre-grown sedum mats, cuttings or plug plants.
2. Meadow Roofs
   Based on a substrate depth of 70-100mm, meadow roofs are usually sown with a seed mix of native wildflowers and grasses that thrive on dry habitats.
3. Bio-diversity Roofs
   Also known as ‘Brown Roofs’, these roofs are designed to recreate natural habitats to encourage the establishment of a diverse range of plants, insects and birds. Normally created from rubble and sub-soils available on site, our basic Extensive mix can be used to extend the local materials or create pockets of diversity within the overall design. We are always pleased to discuss the manufacture of a mix that will simulate a local habitat as closely as possible. Bio-Diversity roofs are often left to colonise naturally but can be lightly sown with wildflower seed mixes.

Green Warrior® Semi-Extensive Green Roof Compost

The basic Semi-Extensive Compost has a similar structure to the above, but Semi-Extensive roofs incorporate a greater substrate depth, 100-250mm, to allow the establishment of a greater diversity of plants. The depth installed can be varied, or small areas mulched with different types of crushed stone to increase the diverse nature of the scheme. Semi-Extensive roofs are normally planted with a mix of alpines, perennials and interesting native grasses.

Green Warrior® Intensive Green Roof Compost

Intensive Green Roofs are generally designed to create a roof garden space with public access and recreational areas. Green Warrior® Intensive Green Roof Compost is manufactured from a blend of aggregates, lightweight aggregates and composted botanical residues and can be installed at depths of 50-1000mm to give stability to as wide a range of plant material as possible from grasses and herbaceous perennials to shrubs and trees. The mix supplied can be varied to suit the different areas within a scheme with a range of alternative structures and nutrient inclusions.
